Bespoke: As good as it gets.
The absolute biggest downside in today's fashion world, whether targeted at women or not, is quick paced trends.
You know home some retailing brands continually have the newest trends and new designs, within as less as a month. The fashion industry is moving faster than ever, that is nice for expressing yourself… but extremely dangerous for the environment. The fashion industry is actually the industry that stands number 3 when listed in most pollution creating industries. Not only is it near to impossible to recycle (since we have a tendency to use largely mixed materials), upcycling is pricey and tough, there is heaps of water spill (from production and maintenance), and there is chemical waste from coloring and printing, the staff has a horribly short life and terrible work conditions, and also the garments are typically used for a couple of seasons, then ends up as waste.
What can we do?
- We can offer your garments to some such stores or brands which collect used materials. Such stores sell most of its collection to charities and aren’t recycled or upcycled.
- We can offer our garments directly to charities as well. It does not do much of the good, because the quantity of garments given may be a ton over the quantity of garments bought, however it's still higher than nothing
- We can opt for ecological materials. Some garments can have eco tex signs on them, which suggests they did less damage to the atmosphere. Some materials might even be marked as fairtrade, which means the staff will have had higher conditions and better wages.
- Pick natural fibers (cotton, bamboo, hemp, silk, wool, cashmere, viscose, etc) over chemically created fibers (polyester (poly-anything, really), nylon, elastane, fleece, etc). Natural fibers are easier for the nature to decompose, and fewer resources were employed in creating them. Moreover, decide single material fabrics, which are easier to recycle.
- Buy less, but higher quality. Shopping for items that last longer suggests that they will not find yourself as waste for a short while. Less shopping counteracts the consumption mind-set. More exemption suggests that it's likely to be handed down or otherwise have second and third owners.
